Dutch Chocolates

There are a few down sides to traveling in Europe, or anywhere else for that matter. But, one of our biggest woes is that once you open up to the various tastes available abroad, it can be hard to come back to a place where the things that you like the best are unavailable. This is also true for Dutch chocolates, which are some of the finest in Europe and the world, but do not enjoy the fame of their cousins from Belgium and France. The demand for Dutch chocolates in the US is very small and that means that they are hard to come by as few stores will carry them.

One of Holland's best loved holidays is Saint Nicholas' Day, celebrated on December 5th. On this day Sinterklaas, along with his little helper Black Piet, brings treats for all of the children. The traditional gift for this day is a chocolate letter (the first letter of the child's first name), but chocolate in the form of delicates leaves has also become a tradition for this time of the year in Holland. But, the children also enjoy a few candy bars as well as the more traditional Sinterklaas gifts!
